Proposal! I am going to examine and investigate the acclaimed relationship between onscreen violence and the increasing behavioural problems amongst society. I will investigate who is ethically responsible weather it be the designers, the companies providing the product, parents or the 'standards' body associated with discipline. To achieve this I will research, what ethics we learn through the media and how this may effect our ethical judgment. To come to a conclusion I am going to investigate the work of a company called Rockstargames who have, and are regularly in the news concerning violence within their games. I will explore there ethical boundaries in design and violence within there designs and game violence and question there design. I will examine and research news articles from the media linking violent acts to video game violence and the effect on society. I will research the work and articles written by ProfessorDavid Buckingham, of the Institute of Education, who is a leading international researcher in the field of media education. I will asses, based on my findings, how I ethically feel about designers and violence shown in the films and games. Then ultimately ask the question is their a link between what we see and how this effects ones ethics and ultimately who is to blame.
Ethics Final Thoughts? This assignent has taught me how to approach speculations in the media. Almost everthing you hear in papers, news, magazines and television are opinions and one sided arguments. I hope i can retain my own opinions and keep an open mind in the future. I have never questioned other peoples ethical judgment and, personally, it take a lot to offend me. This project has taught me to be aware of companies responsibilities and what their goals really are.
