Brief

Level 1 Photography Brief

Aims

To allow the exploration of photographic portraiture utiising the variables involved in producing a photographic image.

Brief

Photographic portraiture. Take portraits of another (New Media) student as well as self portraits, in different styles determined by varying the factors involved in photography.

Assessment

Your final piece of work must consist of 3 portraits of another student in 3 differing styles and one self portrait that you feel most effectively conveys your personality.

You must also produce one portrait in the style of another photographer you have come across in your research, or already know of. Try to simulate the lighting/composition and overall style of the photographer. Display your image with images by your chosen photographer to enable easy comparison.

All images will be put on your website. They must be a maximum of 500 pixels square, in jpeg format and optimised to ensure fast download times. The maximum file size of each image is 50k.

Section 1 - Three Portraits

Bench

For this image i used a very small apperture to increase the depth of field to far into the distance, the shutter speed was still kept at manageable levels due to the bright sunlight outside that day.

Bench2

For this picture i had to do a little work in photoshop, my original intention was to get the subject right in the middle of the shot, however it came out not straight so a bit of rotation was done.

Corner

Again this is using small apertures to create huge depth of field, the image contains lots of straight lines, only a little bit of colour/levels balancing was needed for this picture.

Section 2 - Work in the Style of another artist

Drums

For the above image i tried to emulate the style of Robert Knight, a well known photographer of rock bands during the 70s, the photograph was taken on a film camera using very fast film to match Rboerts style. The sepia tone was added in photoshop to my originally black and white image to finish off the look.

Section 3 - Self Portrait

Selfportrait

I created this image by taking multiple pictures of the chair with different things on it (including me), then playing about in photoshop. In the end there we're three photographs involved in the final image, one with me sitting on the chair, one with the frames and one with nothing.
