Unit Title

Photography INT1030

Unit Brief

Aims To allow the exploration of photographic portraiture utiising the variables involved in producing a photographic image. Brief Photographic portraiture. Take portarits of another (New Media) student as well as self portraits, in different styles determined by varying the factors involved in photography. Assessment Your final piece of work must consist of 3 portraits of another student in 3 differing styles and one self portrait that you feel most effectively conveys your personality. You must also produce one portrait in the style of another photographer you have come across in your research, or already know of. Try to simulate the lighting/composition and overall style of the photographer. Display your image with images by your chosen photographer to enable easy comparison. All images will be put on your website. They must be a maximum of 500 pixels square, in jpeg format and optimised to ensure fast download times. The maximum file size of each image is 50k.

Proposal

I will take my little boy Oscar out for the day and take the photos of him, I think this will make the photos more interesting. It does say in the brief that you are to take the photos of another student, the lecturer said it would be fine to use Oscar.

Reserch

During the research I did for section 3 (where I had to produce a photo in the style of another Photographer) I learnt a lot about a few different photographers. One interesting story I found was about Donald McCullin who was famous for his war photography and once his Nikon camera stopped a bullet intended for him. He also set off to Berlin with the cheapest Camera available and captured some of his best ever shots. He was a great believer in being in the right place at the right time and knowing about your photographic subject. This is why I chose to take my self portrait photo with a cheap 2 mega pixel phone camera - to see if I was able to create a decent photo!

Planning

I will make sure I plan the day that I choose to go out and take the photos, I will also try and make sure I go out on a day when the weather conditions will be favourable. Before I go out I will plan the day on paper, so you could say I had a script for the day. I will plan every photo before it is taken.

Review

I used to really like using film cameras and also developing Black and White photos with my dad many years ago, in our own dark room. Then I thought I understood how a Camera worked and how to apply all the different settings to create different images. After having a few lessons on how to use the Camera and i'ts settings I soon realised there was a lot I didn't fully understand! After completing this small unit of the course, I now fully understand how all the different settings on an SLR Camera work and how you can put them into practice to create some different and brilliant effects. I have found this unit really interesting and have definitely learnt some useful skills which I will be able to put into practice in the future. At the moment I do not own a decent Digital Camera, but I am definitely looking at splashing out on one. If I was to do this again I would probally try and do a bit more work in full colour.
