[The followings pans down the screen in a prologue-esque sequence, in Gothic lettering. In the background, a middle age peasant village.]
The Year of Our Lord, 1347
The Black Death sweeps through Europe, leaving naught but arid desert in its wake. Food is in short supply. Thousands of cattle face being pushed into the sea off a cliff edge, under bad nutritional advice from leading bearded men.
[Cut to two villagers ploughing their farmland, one with pitchfork in hand]
1st Farmer: "'Ey Tony, fancy a turnip between two pieces of bread for lunch?"
2nd Farmer: *grunt*
[A large, booming, implausibly American voice proclaims:]
THANK GOD THOSE DAYS ARE OVER!
[Cut to a clean-shaven model eating a burger]
THE NEW MCBURGER SANDWICH. NOW MADE WITH REAL MEAT!
Product Placement
"Introduce a character in a novel by referring to the product he/she is using."
Walking into the Boss's office, the first inflammation of the senses was the overpowering "new TV smell". He had clearly moved his new piece of gadgetry closer to the door to say, "Hey, look at my new television. I make more money than your average African nation!" The second was the slurping of his fast-food paper cup. The ice at the bottom was spinning around like a tumble dryer, and was feeling more and more like it was swimming around my head.
"Are you a Coke or Pepsi man," he asked, "I've always said that Pepsi people aren't team players. And that's what matters. The team. And if one member of that team falters, the whole team feels it. Are you a TEAM PLAYER?"
He slings the cup at me, the ice dislodges and cracks against the door behind me, the cup lands wetly at my feet. I flinch.
