Photography Project

Unit Brief
I
was briefed to produce the a photographic essay on a subject of our own choosing, with aproval. This would be consisting of betweenfive to ten images (upon discussion of my ideas, Mark Terry, my tutor, agreed to increase the ammout of images in the essay to 30), that aim to educate, entertain or inform, or a combination of the three.

Proposal
My initial ideas began to work from the idea of a timeline, narrating a series of events or following something or someone over time. This slowly evolved into letting only one thing change in the picture, this shows time passing, like a timeline, being able to keep most of the other factors the same, similar to how I used to work

out equations in my previous engineering course. This produced two ideas, One involving following a road, showing a lot of the hustle and bustle over the series of images.
My second idea involed taking photos of a certain place in Hull City Center, which I havn't chosen at this point. This would involve the camera staying in the same place for hours at a time, capturing the place at cartain times of day and night.

The initial brief showed that the general idea we left open, and we could put a little of our own experience into our images. I intended to put myself into my images in a completely diferent way to some other people that I had heard about. I wanted something that would stand out from the other projects and had something new and fresh that other people wouldn't of put themseleves forward for.

My Initial ideas were both time consuming, but out of the two, both
my tutor, Mark Terry, thought the second project would be more 'Dramatic', and on a personal level, the second project would be both easier to produce and a lot more spectacular then the first.

Research
Where did you find the material for your project?
in this project, a lot of the original ideas came from my own experiences, and thoughts, Most of the research I've actually conducted has been centered around the camera and the effects that was possible with the various different settings. Most of these details I found out by using the camera myself or from Mark Terry. The details of the road and day of the shoot, I researched from GoogleMaps, and the weather details I found from Google.

Planning
My work would be presented, Digitally, on the internet and onto Compact Disk. The images in order of time, edited so they all look very similar, flowing one to another. The pictures would be taken over a long period of time, on location, flowing from one to the next, almost like a movie. Because of the files being placed onto the internet, the file sizes should be small, about 40 kilobytes in size, which affects the size of the image. This will make the image small, but still viewable. Becuase of the nature of my Project, the colours are relatively dull, mostly greys, whites, and blacks. The whole day will produce 100 to 200 photogrpahs, all in relatively the same position, using a tripod to achieve the effect.

Review
To be perfectly honest, the project didn't come out as well as I had hoped, Most of the photographs I took were eiter, underexposed, overexposed or wern't sharp enough for me to use them. My original Plan was to have roughly 30 Pictures, but after only 25 were acceptable in my eyes, I reduced that number to 15 which, although is still more than the brief, is still within my limit of 30.

I think there could be a lot to improve about my own project. One of which being the time of year for when i took my photographs. The rain added a fantastic effect, but the irratic nature of the sun made it hard to make any progress. Also, I could of used the camera's settings a lot more than I did, I tried to keep the settings of the camera very similar, but after two photographs showed overexposure, I quickly realised I had to adjust the settings to accomodate for the changing light.

The main problem I encountered on this project was the time element. The practical based work took a lot of time to acomplish, which I decided to thuroughly spend a day working on just the photographs. Another problem I found was the weather, but I knew this was something I had to consider. At the start of the shoot, I decided to attach an umbrella to the tripod, trying to keep the rain off the camera and trying to keep the umbrella out of shot. As time progressed, I soon found out that this action could be a mistake, the wind kept caatching the unbrella and kept trying to move the camera, forcing me to hold the tripod steady while not tacking photos.

I feel like this work could be developed further in many different ways. For one example, Trying a different street, or setting to capture the light, or capturing the place in diferent weather conditions is another option to go into. But again, all these would require lots of time and preperation for the project to confidently work. In my personal opinion, this project could of been a lot better, Given a different time of year or maybe a longer period of time to work on ideas, but, nevertheless, I am quite pleased with how the overall project has turned out. (despite the fact that I have a little cold now, I should learn to keep my head covered)
