Radio Advert
Brief
Working in a group we must produce a radio advert for a radio programme or event (imaginary or real) of our choice. The advert must be exactly one minute long and demonstrate an understanding of audio production equipment and software. Our Idea
We formed a group consisting of Samantha Balyen, Sarah Aylward, Sarah Imeson and myself. As a group we all discussed ideas about the kind of radio trailer we might be interested in producing. We had a group brainstorming session and decided to advertise a Halloween concert for a radio station. Our ideas where influenced by some of the sample sounds we had heard during our introduction to the software garage band. The time of year at which we were given our assignment also had an influence on our decision to pursue a Halloween theme.
Our Research
As a group and individually we listened to radio adverts from a wide range of genres, many of which were produced in very different ways. We discussed this and decided the reason they were all so different was due to the fact they were intended for different audiences. We felt we needed to identify our chosen audience and make our decisions based on their needs and the needs of the message we were trying to convey.
The needs of the intended programme
- To advertise a Halloween concert in conjunction with the radio station
- To give the listener information on the venue and performances
- To advertise where the listener can go to buy tickets
Intended Audience:
- Young listeners 18-27 years old.
- Male and female.
- Listeners who like rock/indie.
- Fans of the performers.
- Interested in guitars, rock/indie music, drinking and socialising.
The style of the piece:
- Halloween themed sounds.
- Young and up-beat.
- Fast cut up dialogue and snippets of performers.
Our Project
I wrote a brief script for our project, we then met as a group and developed that into a longer version for recording.

Samantha Balyen and Sarah Aylward came up with some ideas for the radio stations brand/identity.
The brand/identity of the radio station was an important part of our advert as it would communicate to the audience that this was a concert in conjunction with the radio station i.e. radio ones big weekend. One of the ideas was Radio HSAD as we are studying at the Hull School of Art & Design, we liked the idea that the brand was a link to all the members of our group but it did sound appropriate until our lecturer Jay Moy said it backwards and we decided to brand our radio station Radio Dash.
We used digital voice recorders to record our script, each member of the group recorded the entire script individually. We then compiled and evaluated our recorded audio and we individually started to put our ideas together using Adobe Audition. We then listened to our results and made a group decision on the direction of our work and we decided to use my work as a bases for our advert. I then continued to put the advert together meeting with the rest of the group on regular occasions to evaluate and make joint decisions on our project.

Project Review
I am very happy with the final piece of work that our group produced. The assignment and the process of working as part of a group during this project has been enjoyable and interesting although at sometimes it was logistically challenging. We also planned to insert more information than was possible within our 1 minute time period so we adjusted the script slightly to overcome this problem.
I have worked as a nightclub and bar Disc Jockey since the age of fourteen and I have a keen interest in audio production. When I was younger I had ambitions of gaining employment within the radio industry so this project was thoroughly enjoyable for me.
My interest in this field led me to study media studies at college so I have some previous experience in projects like this. Although I have worked on similar projects there are a few major differences. My previous projects had involved editing audio using an eight track tape and a razor blade, today’s digital methods were something I enjoyed learning about and working with. Modern technology makes the process a lot easier to edit and manipulate the audio although we did encounter a problem. Our project file corrupted, as a result we lost our project, it was in its final stages and we had to start again.
Working as a part of a team was a major part of this assignment. This was enjoyable and when the project first started we had only known each other for a relatively short period of time throughout this assignment we learnt about each other’s previous educational, professional and social experience, skills and future ambitions.
In my opinion the different confidence levels within our team was a slight problem to start with. I tried to solve this by trying to lead the team in group discussions inviting people to put their ideas forward to build confidence and enhance the communication process essential to team work. During this project I saw myself taking the lead. I was concerned that the other members may have thought I was taking over. I tried to consult them in any creative decisions during the project either through discussions beforehand or review’s during the work.
I believe teams in any area need a leader to help them be effective in there organisation but the most important quality in a leader is the willingness to listen and take onboard the requirements of team members and listen to their ideas advice and criticism.
Working as a team did provide us with some logistical problems, the organisation of time was very hard as we had many projects in other areas going on at the same time and we found it hard to find convenient times to meet up. We probably should have spent more time together as a group. We used email and other messaging mediums to keep in touch but the lack of time working as a group meant that sometimes our individual ideas took our project in different directions. This was good in the sense it gave us chance to review and critique each others work but it made it hard to produce a consistent piece of work. Good communication is essential when working as part of a team.
The project in my opinion was a success and I am very happy with our finished piece of work.
