Video Documentary

Brief

Working as a group produce a 3 minute documentary or mockumentary.

Our Idea

We decided to make a documentary using narration over still images, similar to the style made famous by Ken Burns.

Research

We looked at some different styles of documentaries from film makers such as Ken Burns and Michael Moore.  We also looked at a few websites on how the internet works.

Our Project

Our group consisted of Tracy Whittaker, Sarah Aylward, Sam Baylen and myself.  Our original idea was to create a Ken Burns style documentary on the history of the internet.  I wrote a script and this was considered to be okay by one of our lecturers.  But our other lecturer thought our idea was boring and suggested that we do something else.
So we changed our idea to a modern styled documentary that would contain quick changing comical imagery to accompany a detailed narration on the subject of how the internet works?  Sarah Aylward wrote a second script that we decided needed more work.  Tracy Whittaker wrote a third script but it was too long and way too technical for the style of piece we wanted to create.  I then wrote a forth script with the technical information condensed and simplified, this suited the style we wanted to use in our documentary.

Project Review

I am happy with our finished piece, it looks and feels as we intended it to and this is what we hoped for.  There was one particular problem that our group struggled with, due to the fact that we had two different lecturers for this project, we were given two different sets of opinions on what was appropriate with regards to the content and style of the piece.  We were left not knowing what to do for the best in this situation and although this was nobodies fault we would like to point out that this may also be a problem for future groups.
