The Brief
Take portraits of another student as well as self portraits, in different styles.
Your final piece of work must consist of:
1. 3 portraits of another student in 3 differing styles
2. One self portrait that you feel most effectively conveys your personality.
3. A portrait in the style of another photographer you have come across in your research, or already know of.
Statement of Intent
1. For my 3 photographs of a student in differing styles I intend to take photos of Interative Media student Phil Shakesby. I will use the photography studio for two of my photos to practice using light to create different styles, the other photo I intend to take on location.
2. To convey my personality through a photograph I plan to include my love of fashion and/or photography within the photo.
3. For my portrait in the style of another photographer I intend to take photos of Web Design student Samantha Balyen.
1. For my research, I used flickr.com to look at other photographers work. Some of the work that influenced me were:
Portrait #143 by Andy Houghton
Perspective Portrait Franz by pictureclub_2000
Portrait in darkness by Sean Mcgrath
I also researched historical photographers such as David Bailey and Bill Brandt. I intended to do a David Bailey high key B+W style photo but I ended up changing my decision and decided to experiment with perspective.
2. For my self portrait, my research consisted of looking at old photos of myself I liked to decide on a pose. I then brainstormed ideas of how I would compose my self portrait and what props I would use. In the end I decided I would like a self portrait of myself not looking at the camera. I particulary liked these photos:
3. When researching photographers I came across a well know Kate Moss photograph taken by Corinne Day. I had seen this photo before and really liked the composition and the informality of Moss' poses compared to her usual high fashion work.
Did my project work out as planned? Why?
Overall I was happy with the final photographs. I made use of the photography studio and learnt alot about using studio lighting which was something I wanted to understand more.
With my self portrait my decision changed halfway through to the type of photograph I wanted as I realised I didnt like being photographed and found the only photos I was happy with were ones I was either being silly in or parts of me were just in it.
What could be improved?
I feel like the high key photograph I took of Phil could be improved. There was some slight shadowing to the bottom right corner of the photo which was unnoticable in the viewfinder, to remove this I had to use the replace colour tool in photoshop, although by doing this it made my subjects' top half lighter and the shadows more enhanced. I think if I had moved my subject closer and used another softbox to the right it would have filled in the shadows at the bottom aswell as the shadows in his face. It would have also helped the slight halo effect around the top of his shoulders. Perhaps a different colour top would have helped to eliminate this too.
