The Brief

Produce a video, exactly 60 seconds long. The film must have a narrative - it has to tell a story - with a beginning, a middle and an end - however simple.

Statement of Intent

Because I am designing a website for my client Ideal Driver and Rider Training I thought it might be nice to accompany it with a video to encourage people to take their CBT training with them.

You can view my premise and synopsis in PDF format here.

Research

I used youtube.com to research motorbike and CBT instructing videos. Some of the videos I looked at were:

1st Gear motorcycle Training

Motorcycle Safety Foundation

I also spoke to Rob Fox (a motorbike instructor for Ideal) about what was involved in a CBT training course, we narrowed the day down to 5 elements:

1. Intro to CBT

2. Intro to Kit

3. Padwork (off-road training)

4. Road Lecture (classroom)

5. Road Ride (on-road training)

With this in mind I was able to create my story board:

Our tutor, Mal Williamson showed us how to compose a structure for our video using "in control" and "out of control" methods. We researched scenes from finding nemo and batman films to see how the structure was represented in them.

My Final Piece

(Approx 4.71mb)

Project Review

Did my project work out as planned?

No, in my original planning of my synopsis and storyboard I had extra scenes at the beginning and at the end of the student entering and leaving ideal, which I did not include. I found it difficult to fit a full days work on CBTs into one minute and had to cut some clips from the final piece. I think because of this the film then lost the structure I had planned.

After my first edit using Adobe Premier Pro I included titles and some sound from the video clips, after soon realising this then made the file size bigger I had to delete these parts of the video to enable the file size to reach 5mb (the max file size for the brief).

Could it be improved?

Yes, I believe I could have improved the ending of the video. From were the students are taken out on the road (0.41secs onwards) it seems to quickly come to an end. The clip of the students on their scooters riding off was originally for the ending of the clip, but because I had no footage of the on-road training I had to use it for that instead. Maybe I could have gone back to Ideal and got a bit more footage, such as the students riding off on their scooter without L plates to finalise the ending of the video and perhaps some footage of the instructors using their radios to communicate during the on-road training.
