The Brief

Within a group produce a video, exactly 3 minutes long. The film must be in the style of a documentary or mockumentary. The film must have a narrative - it has to tell a story - with a beginning, middle and an end - however simple.

Statement of Intent

As a group we intend to produce a documentary on 'how the internet works'. It will be an informative documentary aimed at a early twenty-somethings interested in computers and how things work.

The group consists of myself, Sam Balyen, Phil Shakesby and Tracy Whittaker.

Research

To begin with we needed to have a good understanding of how the internet works. Phil did some research via google into the many things that make up the internet.

Using Youtube we managed to find some similar videos online about how the internet works. You can view them here:

The Internet Explained

From this we soon realised the style of video we wanted to produce. Phonejacker, is a popular comedy on Channel four were an unknown man calls people and plays pranks. The visual accompanying the audio is usually random pictures or photographs which flash up on the screen relating to what the fonejacker says. To view an example of this click the link below:

The Final Piece

After we had decided what we wanted to achieve with the video, Phil and Tracy started to write a script. We went through a few scripts to get the right one, as we wanted to be informative but in a relaxed style.

After we was all happy with the script, myself and Phil booked the recording studio and I recorded narrating the script. Phil took the recording home to work on and began putting the video together in Flash.

In the meantime, to ensure we had some video I recorded my mum on the internet at home. I thought this would be nice to break up the still images within the piece. Tracy used Frapps to record herself checking her mail and doing things on the internet.

Once Phil had started the video, it was handed to myself and Sam who worked on it from home. We finished the video for Tracy to take it home and tidy up some of the images and embed the fonts.

Project Review

Did our project work out as planned?

No, we had originally decided we wanted to do a documentary on the history of the Internet, we changed our minds after confusion between lecturers and ended up changing the script to 'how the internet works'. This delayed us in starting the video.

Overall I am pleased with the final result.

Could it be improved?

Yes, I believe there is always room for improvement. If we had had more time we could have added more video to the piece although I think this would have maybe changed the style of it.
